Charging Policy for hESC lines
The UK Stem Cell Bank (UKSCB) was established to provide quality
controlled stocks of human embryonic, foetal and adult stem cell
lines. The UKSCB has distributed stem cell lines worldwide and has
waived charges for all cell lines provided, charging only shipping
costs.
In late 2010, the UK Steering Committee and the Bank’s funders
decided that the Bank should move to partial cost recovery and a
mechanism for charging has been implemented. This policy has
been designed to distinguish between commercial and academic
accessors.
Accordingly, from January 1st 2010, the UKSCB will
apply charges for cell lines under a new charging policy published
in the Code of Practice for the Use of Human Stem Cell Lines (2010)
(Section 6.6). All new applications to the Steering Committee for
human embryonic stem cell lines (hESC) from the UKSCB will be
subject to charges as set out on the approved Charging Schedule.
Applications made to the Steering Committee prior to this date,
and orders for stem cell lines currently being processed will not
be subject to these charges; However they will be subject to
shipping charges as is currently the case.
It is accepted that the Charging Policy for the Bank’s hESC
lines may change over time, and the policy will continue to be
reviewed on a regular basis. At present, the Bank does not
distribute any other cell products or cell lines apart from those
listed on the website. Should the Bank increase its portfolio of
products and services in the future, then the Bank intends to levy
appropriate charges for the provision of these goods and
services.
